The Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) 2012 Awards Night was held at the Meralco Theater tonight, December 27. This was the 38th year of the prestigious award-giving body. In those 38 years, MMFF never failed in giving us meaningful and quality movies.

One of the most awaited moment was the announcement of the Best Picture. In the past 3 days, since the opening of all the MMFF movies last December 25, the movies Thy Womb, El Presidente, One More Try and Sisterakas were said to be the strong contenders of the title.

In the recently concluded awards night, One More Try bagged the Best Picture award, followed by El Presidente as 2nd Best Picture and Sisterakas as the 3rd.

One More Try, starring Angel Locsin, Dingdong Dantes, Angelica Panganiban and Zanjoe Marudo, was produced by Star Cinema. The story was about a single mother, Grace (Angel Locsin), who is forced to reconnect with her son’s biological father Edward (Dingdong Dantes) who is married to Jacqueline ( Angelica Panganiban) to save her son from a worsening rare blood condition. The child’s life is at stake, Grace and Edward’s respective relationships is also at danger of ruining

Aside from the Best Picture award, the movie also brought home other 5 awards including Best Actor (Dingdong Dantes), Best Editing, Best Child Performer (Miguel Vergara), Best Screenplay, and First Fernando Poe Jr. Memorial Awards of Excellence.

Some movie outfits have already submitted their entries for the 38th MMFF. The first one to submit was ER Ejercito’s Scenema concept which has 2 scripts for El Presidente and Ben Tumbling. The next was the Unitel which will produce Lola Basyang Story.

This movie entries, however, will still be subjected for approval of MMFF’s screening committee. Also, based on experience, productions often changes the casting of their entries as the MMFF approaches. Thus, the casts listed above for each movie may not be in the final casting.

So far, the screening committee will be choosing from 6 drama, 2 fantasy, 2 comedy, 2 horror, and 1 romantic comedy.

MMFF 2012 will premiere on Christmas Day of this year.

Another horror film from the Queen of Horror Films, Kris Aquino. She, along with Dingdong Dantes (his first in Star Cinema) and Angelica Panganiban, stars in the Official Entry of Star Cinema for the MMFF 2011, directed by Bb. Joyce Bernal.

“Segunda Mano” literally means second-hand. The story will revolve around ghost hunting the person who got their most values possession. As what I have gathered from the teaser of the film, the most valued possession would be a red bag that was bought by Kris Aquino’s character from an “Ukay-Ukay” store.

Also starring in the film are Jhong Hilario, Bangs Garcia, Angel Jacob, Ian Veneracion, Rico Blanco, and Sofia Millares.

It looks like we have yet another simple, classic ghost story from Star Cinema that promises to scare us this Christmas season.
